Meet Amy Shuttleworth
EVCT is excited to welcome Amy Shuttleworth. Amy will be directing the final play of the 2025-2026 season, Charlotte’s Web!
Kathleen Richards: How long have you been directing?
Amy Shuttleworth: I’ve been directing youth theatre for over 20 years. I’ve had the chance to work with a wide range of students and productions over that time, and I still feel just as excited walking into a rehearsal room now as I did at the very beginning. Every group of young actors brings something new, which keeps the work fresh and meaningful.
What is your favorite part of directing youth theatre?
My favorite part is watching young artists grow in confidence. Theatre gives them a space to try something new, take risks, and discover what they’re capable of. I love seeing the moment when something clicks for them, whether it’s finding their voice, connecting to a character, or simply feeling like they belong in the room.
What is your favorite part of the rehearsal process?
I really love the early part of rehearsals when we’re building the world of the play together. It’s where ideas start to take shape and the cast begins to connect, not just to the material but to each other. There’s a sense of collaboration and discovery that feels really special, and you can start to see the foundation of something meaningful forming.
What do you love about Charlotte’s Web?
What I love most about Charlotte’s Web is how gently it speaks to big ideas like friendship, loss, and the importance of seeing value in others. It’s a story that meets young audiences where they are but also gives them something deeper to hold onto. There’s a quiet kind of magic in it that feels honest and lasting.
What are you most excited for with this production?
I’m really excited to bring people together around this story. It’s the kind of piece that invites connection, both within the cast and with the audience. There’s something really special about creating a shared experience like this, and I’m looking forward to seeing this group of young artists build something meaningful together and share it with their community.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I’ve long admired EVCT and its commitment to youth arts education for nearly 30 years. It’s clear this is a community that truly values creativity, growth, and the experience of young performers. I’m really excited to have the opportunity to be part of that. I have lots of fun ideas in store, and I can’t wait to get started.
