Producing Artistic Director

PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR (Part-Time, Salaried)

Position Overview

East Valley Children’s Theatre (EVCT) is seeking a creative, collaborative and highly organized Producing Artistic Director to oversee the organization’s main stage productions. This leadership role is responsible for collaborating on the artistic vision for EVCT seasons, assembling artistic teams, and maintaining the relationship with our performance venue, The Mesa Arts Center. This role will be pivotal in helping to guide EVCT’s long-term growth and sustainability within the East Valley community.

Oversee Production Programming

  • Propose the annual mainstage performances and budgets for our 5 mainstage shows
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager regarding contracts
  • Identify and select 5 show mainstage season each year for board approval
  • Assemble production team for each production
  • Ability to step into production roles as needed
  • Oversee all audition requirements and needs, communicating with key stakeholders
  • Coordinate regular Production Meetings for each mainstage production
  • Facilitate the volunteer needs with the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Participate in the development of budgets and collaborate on contractual production needs with EVCT Operations Manager
  • Serve as primary Mesa Arts Center liaison
  • Coordinate with EVCT Operations Manager regarding ticket sales, promotions, comp tickets, settlements etc…
  • Serve on committee for the annual selection process of the Aspiring Playwright Contest winner
  • Coordinate curricular efforts with the education director to reflect the themes within mainstage productions
  • Support marketing efforts for mainstage productions
  • Serve as primary grant writer for at least 3 grant opportunities per year and provide support to the volunteer grant writer as needed.
  • Collaborate with other team members to create season calendar of events

Leadership Responsibilities

Operations Focus

  • Provide guidance to contractors and staff in a way that aligns with EVCT’s mission
  • Collaborate with EVCT management to identify talent and participate in hiring processes
  • Collaborate with organization management to develop budgets
  • Participate in monthly financial reporting as required
  • Attend staff meetings

Board Focus

  • Attend monthly Board Meetings, as needed
  • Create monthly programming report for the Board of Directors
  • Work with EVCT BOD to update yearly operational plan, and maintain goals/objectives
  • Participate in creation and maintenance of 3-5 year strategic plan
  • Cultivate and maintain community partnerships by attending Mesa Chamber opportunities, various community events, EVCT fundraisers
  • Participate in staff events and responsibilities like house managing productions, Troupe Showcases, Annual Gala, and other special events as scheduled

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in nonprofit arts administration
  • Strong directing resume, specifically within youth theatre
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience creating and managing budgets, systems, and staff
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across departments and with Board of Directors

Compensation

  • Salary: $25-$30k (based on experience)

Studio Assistant

Title: Studio Assistant

Salary: $15 an hour

Overview

EVCT is looking for a Studio Assistant to oversee the day-to-day operations of our studio office. This position supports the Business Manager, Artistic Director, creative and education teams in managing the front desk for both the production and education departments.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage and maintain the studio office, and space including providing on-site support for classes, productions and rehearsals.
  • Oversee the front desk, phones, registration, supplies, attendance, and backup support for classes.
  • Cover the front desk during office hours, greet visitors and ensure the safe check-in/check out of students.
  • Handle communication and correspondence with parents, including explaining and passing out registration and promotional materials.
  • On-site support for creative and education teams allowing business access. Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Google Suite
  • Proficiency in Excel and/or Google Sheets
  • Experience working in theatre.
  • Enjoys working with children and families.
  • Comfortable corresponding with parents and teachers.
  • Has (or will obtain) a valid and current fingerprint card.
  • Available for work in the late afternoon, evenings and weekends.
  • High School students will be considered for this position if they are of age to work legally.

Preferred Skills:

  • Must be able to lift and move items weighing 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting, bending, crawling, and climbing ladders.

Production Designers and Directors

EVCT is looking for Production Designers in Lighting, Sound, Set, Costumes, Props, Choreography and Makeup & Hair, as well as Music Directors, Stage Managers and Directors for our main stage productions.

  • Be working in or have worked in theatre or musical theatre in the past.

  • Are available for work in the late afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays

Our design team members and directors at EVCT work on our four main stage productions and our junior main stage show. Typical time line includes a production meeting about 1 month from auditions, a meeting at the Mesa Arts Center a couple weeks later, Two days of auditions and a call back audition, about 4 weeks of rehearsals and a three days of tech rehearsal and two weekends of shows (Thursday-Sunday). All productions rehearse at the EVCT Rehearsal Studio, 4501 East Main St., in Mesa.

This leadership role ensures compliance with standard accounting practices and nonprofit regulations, driving organizational efficiency by supporting staff, managing systems and guiding EVCT’s long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership:

  • Oversee daily operations across programs and departments to streamline workflows, ensure compliance and align with EVCT’s mission.
  • Act as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, provide and present operational reports, partner with the finance committee for the annual budget, and support strategic planning.
  • Identify workflow challenges and implement solutions.
    Supervise and train staff, support department leads, and foster a collaborative, high-functioning environment.
  • Serve as an organizational representative to families, patrons, donors and community partners.

Financial Oversight:

  • Process day-to-day transactions across all systems, managing all cash and digital. deposits, and organize and track all documentation for the external bookkeeper.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial data to the treasurer upon request.
  • Support grant writers and program staff with accurate budgeting, tracking, expense reporting, and data through enrollment management.

Human Resources, Compliance, and Risk Management

  • Manage employee onboarding, time tracking, personnel records, and payroll processing for independent contractors while fostering a positive, collaborative and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Support recruitment processes for administrative, educational, and production roles as needed.
  • Manage and maintain all payroll and personnel records in compliance with employment laws and internal policies.
  • Ensure adherence to child safety policies, background checks and mandated reporting standards.
  • Maintain all state and federal nonprofit registrations, insurance policies, and business licenses.
  • Work with external auditors, accountants, and legal advisors to ensure compliance with all 501(c)(3) requirements, such as assisting in the development and documentation of internal controls, financial procedures, and risk management practices.
  • Maintain documentation and initiation of fingerprint clearance cards for employees, contractors, and volunteers.

Facilities, and Systems Management

  • Develop and oversee administrative systems, policies and processes across the organization to include registration software, student databases, and office technology.
  • Support logistics for productions, workshops, and special events (e.g., purchase orders, rental agreements, insurance).
  • Develop an organization calendar for all stakeholders to ensure alignment.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and venues to ensure program and production needs are met.
  • Ensure the studio spaces adhere to safety standards and are kept in a neat, professional working condition.
  • Identify areas of improvement and make corrections where needed.
  • Assist with community engagement and recruitment activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Arts Administration, Nonprofit Management, Theatre, Business Administration, or a closely related field, OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Requires 1-3 years of proven experience in nonprofit work, accounting, arts administration, or a related field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Demonstrated experience with basic nonprofit accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Prior experience working in a performing arts environment.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with both creative and administrative teams.
  • Working knowledge of software applications such as Adobe, Airtable, Google Suite, and QuickBooks.
  • Ability to adapt to a quick-changing environment and handle multiple tasks and deadlines at the same time.
  • Passion for arts education and nonprofit work.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit financial management, accounting, or business operations.
  • Experience with budget forecasting and/or strategic planning.
  • Experience working with senior-level management and/or a Board of Directors.
  • Knowledge of Human Resource practices and risk management practices.
  • Experience with nonprofit 501(c)(3) standards.

Teaching Artist

EVCT is looking for teaching artists in the fields of theatre and musical theatre to teach its classes and direct its performance troupes.  

Requirements for the jobs:

  • Have a degree (either 2-4 years) in theatre or musical theatre.  
  • Be working in or have worked in theatre or musical theatre in the past.  
  • Enjoy working with children.
  • Have a valid and current fingerprint card.  
  • Are available for work in the late afternoon or evening.

Our teaching artists at EVCT are our instructors for our 7-week classes that meet late afternoons and evenings Monday through Thursday. We also hire them to direct our EVCT Express Troupe (acting troupe for kids age 8-16), our On The Spot Teen Improv Troupe (improv troupe for kids age 12-18), our EVCT Bravo, (musical theatre troupe for kids age 12-18), Our Literature Alive Program, (a homeschooled troupe) that performs in the schools, and/or an EVCT Company Troupe (a group of selected EVCT participants) who learn a show at the beginning of the season and are available to perform on short notice or for special fund-raising events.
