Aspiring Playwrights Contest Deadline
All Day

EVCT believes in the power of storytelling and understands that original plays have the ability to create unique and captivating experiences for audiences. By welcoming aspiring playwrights into their creative community, EVCT aims to foster a vibrant and diverse repertoire of performances that reflect the creativity, imagination, and unique voices of the next generation of playwrights.

Contest rules and prizes are listed below:
  • All plays must be submitted to East Valley Children’s Theatre no later than February 1, 2024.
  • Email submissions to: [email protected].
  • Playwrights must include a cover sheet with name, address, phone number, email address, and age.
  • Plays must be suitable for children to perform and for an audience of children. (Plays with small casts are not as likely to be chosen for performance; casts of 18 or more are preferred).
  • Plays must be 60-90 minutes in length. Shorter plays may be submitted but will not be considered for a seasonal theatrical production.
  • Plays and musicals must not have been previously performed. They must be original and unpublished.
  • Musicals must include a copy of the music in either manuscript or audio-recording format.
  • Playwrights are not required to pay an entry fee.

The first place entry will receive a $500 cash prize, a limited stipend for travel, and will be produced by East Valley Children’s Theatre in its upcoming season, if it meets all the criteria for performance. Second and third place winners will be announced and recognized. Travel stipend is dependent on the author attending the show, accruing travel costs and having a talkback with the actors.

Winner will be announced by April 1, 2024.

Literature Alive!
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Literature Alive!, a literacy program at East Valley Children’s Theatre that encourages kids to read and write.   We have a Literature Alive Troupe that is made up of homeschooled kids.

The troupe rehearses for 6 rehearsals in a five-week period both creating and performing an original script based on a children’s book.  We then perform at Elementary schools (for Kindergarten and First Grade students).

We go into the schools, read a book to the kids, then we act out the story in our 20 minute original play, and if time permits we do a little interactive activity with the kids who are in the audience.  Then as the kids leave they are all given a book of the story we just read and acted out.  The program has been very successful and is a great experience for actors and audience alike.

Cost to be in the program is $150 per participant.  ESA Funding accepted as payment.

If you are interested in being a part of our Literature Alive! program, please contact the office at 480-756-3828.

Jr. Main Stage Production: The Adventures of Rikki-Tikki Tavi

Rehearsals: February 24 through March 30

Performances: April 4 through April 7

Junior Main Stage Production:

EVCT offers a performance training for kids age 7-14. This experience is a non-cut production that will be fully staged at the Mesa Arts Center, with costumes, sets, makeup, props and lights.

Jr. Main Stage Experience

Join us for this year’s Junior Production, The Adventures of Rikki-Tikki Tavi! EVCT’s Jr. Main Stage Production is the perfect introduction to our main stage performance process for younger children. It also gives our preteen and younger teen performers the chance for a lead role!

This production is open to all children ages 7-14. This is our “no cut” show, so all children registered will be given a role. While our junior production has a shorter, more manageable rehearsal and performance schedule, it still has all the great production value EVCT’s mainstage performances are known for. Best of all, it gives our junior performers the experience of performing at the Mesa Arts Center!

Even with the shorter rehearsal schedule, this still is a full production and requires a lot of work on the part of our child actors. Our child actors are responsible for maintaining non-disruptive behavior throughout rehearsals, listening, taking direction and learning their lines on time. EVCT offers several production classes and performance troupes that might be a better option if your child isn’t quite ready for a full production. Please take a look at the production calendar to ensure you and your child are ready for this commitment. Your child may not be called to all rehearsals after casting. Families will be given the official call calendar after the first week of rehearsal when casting is complete.

Director: Brenda Cranson
